Part 2:  Car Display and Concours

Instead of washing cars Tuesday night I played in the pool with the kids, so at 5:30 a.m. I was up and washing cars at a self wash I found around the corner from our hotel.

Car washing complete, my cars wait in the hotel parking lot while the kids wake up and get breakfast.

After breakfast we headed over to the GM Tech Center for the concours and the car display.  I put both cars in the car display.  There were a lot of awesome Corvairs there, and it was great to meet with many VV friends.

But enough blather; here are some pictures.  First up is Connie Brummer's Veruca.  Amazing what she did with this car since last fall.  It's beautiful.

There were one or two late model convertibles in the car display:

I noticed GM security chasing these two guys around the grounds, but Chuck Armer and Ned Madsen did stop long enough for this mug shot:

This was an absolutely incredible '65 Corsa coupe.  I wish I owned it.  Oh, wait, I do!

Mike Hicks and his son Nathaniel close the lid on their '65 Monza convertible.

This '69 Monza belongs to Bruce McIntosh and was nicely equipped with 140 PG powertrain, AM/FM radio, remote mirror and a telescoping steering wheel, among other options.

An interior shot of Bruce's '69:

I was very taken by this red '60 coupe.  The car was easily nice enough to score very strongly in concours but was in the car display.  It was beautifully done.

The engine compartment was immaculate:

1965 Monza sedan, a very handsome car in Sierra Tan:

In the modified section was this classy looking roadster with Corvair power.

I know I posted pictures of Rick Norris's race car last year, but he has done more work to it and it is just one sharp looking car.

This is my "cover shot" for this year's convention.  This clean '69 convertible sports a North Carolina license plate, but is owned by Robert Maciejewski from Chesterfield, Michigan.

The grass wasn't greener on the concours side of the field.  In fact, it looked pretty parched, compared to the car display area, which was a bit mucky from overwatering.  The dry grass looks a lot like the rest of Michigan, which has been in drought for most of the last month.  (Of course, the drought broke this week, but more on that later.)

Anyway, this '64  convertible in the modified class was quite handsome with a deep metallic green finish and tan top and interior.

I think I am going to post mostly, maybe only, early photos of the concours to make up for my one-sided coverage of the car display.  This convertible featured Lagoon Aqua paint, a rare color.

By the way, I am always looking for additional photos for the "Color My Vair" feature.  I am going to be adding some from this event.

A front shot of the same car.

Back over in the car display, I liked this '61 wagon.

After my kids got bored with me ogling Corvairs, we got in line for the bus to the Heritage Center.  We were in for a treat.
