Just Horsin' Around

CORSA International Convention

June 14-18, 2004

Part 1: On the Road

How do you fit two adults, four children and the necessary (and unnecessary) gear for a week away from home in a '65 Corsa?

The answer is simple:  you don't.

Faced with this reality, and knowing that the whole family wanted to come along to the Convention this year, I quickly decided that if I was going to have a Corvair at the Convention, it would have to get its own ride.

I called my Uncle Dale and asked if I could use his car trailer.  He said no problem, so I fetched the beast, loaded up the Suburban with gear, loaded the car onto the trailer, stuffed Joy and the kids in the truck, and headed south early in the morning on Tuesday, June 15th.

We got into a few rainstorms and ran nip and tuck with an early convertible from the DACC for awhile, but otherwise the trip was uneventful.  Almost.

About a mile from the hotel, I pulled away from a light and the Corsa rolled off the trailer.  The front strap had broken, and I had foolishly not set up a safety.  I was more fortunate than I deserved.  The driver behind the car just stopped, rather than plowing into it, and other than a whang on the rear air grille, a wadding of my NOS right grille insert,  a chip in the paint, and a dent on the floor, the car was fine.

I somewhat shakily drove the car to the hotel, while Joy drove the Suburban and the self-unloading trailer.

Our plan for the Convention was to hit a few of the highlights, enjoy the hotel pool, and not drive my family nuts by doing every single Corvair activity.

Tuesday we pretty much just spent getting settled in.  The first order of business for me was to go down to the vendor area and find a new grille insert.  In fine hunter-gatherer mode, I tracked my quarry, killed it, and installed it on my car.
