Shuffle off to Buffalo

CORSA International Convention

Part 5:  Going Home

July 29, 2006

The trailer is in its spot next to the pole barn.  The Suburban is emptied and the Corvairs are back in their place.  As I write the banquet is probably drawing to a close and all the winners have been announced.  The Buffalo convention is over, at least for us, but we will have a lot of good memories.

We got a decent start this morning, meeting Jeff Clark at the storage facility to pick up our trailer.  We had the cars loaded and left the host hotel at about 9:45 a.m.

By 10:15 we had crossed the boarder and put Buffalo in our mirrors.

Joy decided she would rather drive the convertible than the Suburban on the way back home.  We had good weather for the drive and puttered across Ontario at 60 mph.  After a long delay we crossed back into the U.S. at Sarnia.  After lunch, Joy and I parted company because I had to take Jacob to Metro Airport in Detroit.  Both Joy's drive back to DeWitt  with the Suburban and my trip from the airport were uneventful.

Both Corvairs ran pretty much flawlessly for the week.  We had none of the excitement of Lexington with cars falling from trailers and emergency room visits, and had a wonderful time in Buffalo.  Predictably, the on-line post-mortems of the convention have started, so I will add my two cents worth.

Every one of the national CORSA conventions I have attended have  been hosted by local clubs who have never hosted a national event before.  They are organized by volunteers.  They work long, hard hours to make our visit as enjoyable as possible.  As such, I hope to return their graciousness.   It seems there are always a few hiccups, which is hardly surprising, and such was the case in Buffalo.  However, in spite of a couple of glitches, for the Wittes this convention was an unqualified success. We had a great time, splashed a lot of water out of the pool, saw some great cars,  made new friendships, and renewed some old ones.  I have already sent some suggestions to the committee working on the Detroit convention--there is always room for improvement--but my only comment to the 4 Clubs is, well done, and thank you for hosting us in your city.
