Turbo Odyssey Part 16 -- More Endless Blather about Putting the Car Together bla bla bla bla bla

June 30, 2005

Ok, I am not going to turn this into a rant about my computer, but it has been a month since I last updated my progress on the convertible.

I have accomplished a few things in the last month.

I'm almost done with the little tack strips in the top frame.  That was certainly a thankless task.  I have been taking care of little details, such as the windshield trim, engine compartment harness, engine compartment lamp, and vent windows.

Other fun tasks included sandblasting and painting bumper bolts and the vibration dampener canisters removed from the engine compartment:

The blower fan got painted.  I popped the top shroud over it for a picture:

I also got to work on painting the transaxle.  The case was blasted and primed in epoxy prior to assembly.  For final paint, I scuffed the epoxy with a Scotchbrite pad and then cleaned the case with brake cleaner.  Here is a shot into the top of the rebuilt differential:

This area was masked off:

The rest of the transaxle was also masked, and then the powertrain was hung from my engine hoist so that it could be painted.  Here are a couple shots of the transaxle prior to painting:

And some "after" pictures:

Since I had the camera out and the engine up in the air I took some pictures to document the numbers on the powertrain.  Not being a compulsive "numbers matching" kinda fella, I don't know for sure what all these numbers mean, though I have faith that the wise gurus of Virtual Vairs will magically cure my ignorance.  Well, they'll at least cure my ignorance on this issue.  I am sure that not even they can master the grand and sweeping scope of my general ignorance.  For example, I have no idea what the air velocity of an unladen African swallow is.

Ahem.  Back to powertrain numbers.   This one, AD 0107,  is stamped on the right side of the differential:

Here is the code on the transmission (I think I am going to make this picture into wallpaper for my computer):

Differential casting number:

Yeah, yeah, I know it's upside down.  So sue me.  If you want it flipped over, I think they make software for that. This is the left cylinder head:

Right head:

I think both heads have been replaced.  Here's the engine block:

The more observant may have noticed from the pictures that the car itself is not in the in the barn.  I took it to Bob Reeve last night for some minor touch up work.

My spanky fresh replated bumpers that I ordered from Lon Wall came yesterday.  Boy, is them pretty!  I ordered all new exhaust from Clarks, and the crossover, turbo inlet, turbo outlet and muffler along with the exhaust manifolds were set to JetHot for ceramic coating.  They called Monday to let me know that the were done and that the parts should have shipped back this way this past Tuesday.  The bumper brackets except for the middle three for the front bumper are off being powdercoated black.  I noticed that the three middle front brackets were painted body color, so those are off with Bob for repainting.

And that's the news from Lake Woebegon.
