Convertible Quest, Part 3

January 27, 2003

Here I am, still unsubscribed from the Virtual Vairs list, but I can't stay away....

Just an update on the search for a vert.

It's been over a week since I made my offer of $2,000 on the Evening Orchid Monza. The conversation with the seller was pleasant, and he wasn't offended that I was offering half of the asking price. He said he would get back to me the next day, but I haven't heard from him since. I told him to keep my number but I think my offer was rejected. If anyone is looking for a '65 Evening Orchid Monza convertible in mint condition with rusted rocker panels for $4,000, let me know and I'll hook you up.

I received an e-mail of some poor quality pictures of a '65 Corsa vert from a guy who has the car listed on the Corsa website classifieds. The car needs some bodywork from collision damage. It's black with a black power top and white interior. 140/4. He wants $2,500 for the car, and from what little I can see, that money buys me a bunch of bodywork. I sent him a list of questions and as yet have received no answers.

I think I should bide my time and get a decent car for more money.

On that score, there's a '66 Monza on a nationally recognized auction site that looks pretty neat, but the price appears to be headed for the stratosphere. I sent the seller questions about the car yesterday and have yet to receive a response.

I wonder if the prices I see in the on-line auctions are depressed. I would think they would have to be, with many cars changing hands sight-unseen. I would have to contact another VV member to check out any car I wanted to buy, and with a seven day auction that's asking a lot from someone across the country who may have other things on his schedule. As enticing as the auctions are, I think perhaps buying through Corsa might be a better option. Then again, who knows where the "right" car will be listed?
